The Middle East
The German-speaking congregations in the Middle East (Beirut, Cairo, Cyprus, Dubai, Istanbul, Jerusalem with Amman, Tehran) have several things in common: In all of them live German women who are married to native husbands (normally Muslims). For many years, the region has been enduring a crisis situation. All the churches in the region are in a minority in an Islamic environment. Credit must be given to the ecumenical movement (and within it to the German-speaking congregations) for the improvement in relations between Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, Orthodox and Protestant churches in recent decades. Various foundations share responsibility for the special involvement of the EKD in the Holy Land. Among them are the Church of the Redeemer and a Hospice in the old city of Jerusalem, the Church of the Ascension and the Service for Pilgrims and Tourists situated on the Mount of Olives, and the German Protestant Institute for Archaeology in the Holy Land.
